HP executives have announced a cloud platform based on OpenStack amid a flurry of other cloud-related announcements at the HP World Tour in Beijing.

“Our focus, our ambition, our passion is to provide the cloud that enterprise relies on,” said HP COO Bill Veghte.

HP Cloud OS is an open and extensible could platform based on the open-source OpenStack collection of software. HP said the announcement is a response to enterprises' desire for open-source and hybrid cloud platforms.

HP’s private cloud product, CloudSystem, already embeds Cloud OS, HP said. HP’s public cloud product, Cloud Services, will also use Cloud OS technology, it said. In addition, HP plans to offer its Moonshot servers with Cloud OS, targeting specific cloud workloads like dedicated hosting and large websites.

Asked why HP’s open cloud platform is different from other offerings in the market, Veghte pointed mainly to HP’s experience.

“As different from other vendors, we’ve been at it for a while,” the COO said. He added that HP has a public cloud service and provides strong service level agreements.

HP supported its pitch with the release of study showing that Australian enterprises are increasingly adopting cloud using hybrid delivery models. The vendor commissioned Coleman Parkes Research to conduct 200 interviews in the Asia Pacific and Japan.

In the report, HP predicted that by 2016, 80 per cent of enterprise IT delivery will be cloud-based in Australia. Of that number, 37 per cent will be private cloud, 24 percent will be managed cloud and 20 per cent will be public cloud, it said.

In Australia, 65 per cent of respondents said they believed cloud computing should evolve to an open platform, the study found.
