ICT salaries remain static

A Peoplebank survey found ICT jobs advertisments in June were slightly lower than May

ICT pay across Australia has remained static following a slight softening in the tech sector, according to a Peoplebank salary survey.

The Peoplebank ICT Jobs Index tracks advertised jobs across the country. It found ICT jobs advertisments in June were slightly lower than May, particularly in mining, retail and manufacturing organisations.

“All of our data – our salary survey, Jobs Index and Peoplebank’s own experience – suggests a market that – bar NSW – has hit the pause button,” Peter Acheson, CEO of Peoplebank, said in a statement.

“Employers tell us that they are postponing the start of new projects until after the federal election, and the broader reality is that with the general lack of heat in Australia’s economy, there is little market pressure to speed ahead with their ICT strategies.”

Acheson said there are signs some markets are recovering and there are good prospects for ICT jobs nationally.

In NSW, ICT recruitment was strong in the latter part of the 2013 financial year for skills for business-as-usual tasks, but not special projects. Projects in banking, telecommunications and state government sectors lifted to levels at the same period in 2012.

In WA, testers, business analysts, Sharepoint and .NET developers are in demand, despite a market which is on ‘pause’, according to Peoplebank.

In Victoria, there has been reduced hiring in utilities, mining and enterprise organisations, with the demand the strongest for niche skill sets.

In the ACT, there is strong demand for testers and professionals with Sharepoint skills.

SA experienced a late increase in hiring in June. However, Peoplebank said the state has witnessed a fall in state government, business and residential spending.

Meanwhile, the jobs index found QLD remains flat and demand for ICT contractors has dropped by around 50 per cent, with permanent roles also falling.

Senior CIOs and IT directors in Sydney are earning salaries of $350,000 per annum compared to $300,000 in Melbourne and $180,500 in Brisbane.
