Telstra plans to add 1000 jobs

Growth in network applications and services creating jobs says chairman

Telstra (ASX:TLS) could be adding up to 1000 jobs as some divisions such as network applications and services grow.

Speaking at the telco's AGM in Sydney, Telstra chairman Catherine Livingstone said that the telco had restructured in response to changing market structures.

Telstra recently confirmed that up to 1100 jobs will be cut from its operations workforce by June 2014.

“We have made announcements that could result in close to 1000 jobs being added by operations in other areas,” she said.

“Where possible, we find redeployment and/or retraining opportunities for our people who are impacted by these changes.”

Asbestos

Turning to the issue of asbestos in Telstra pits, Livingstone said that safety procedures were not followed in some cases.

“Remediation work on our pits stopped as soon as we identified concerns with the work practices used by some of our contractors,” she said. “We have taken steps to absolutely minimise the risk of such incidents occurring again,”

Pit work began on 26 August after the telco introduced training requirements and ensured contracting partners adhered to requirements.

She added that the company is training up to 200 staff to supervise pit remediation in the field.

“Our priority has been – and remains – the safety of our employees, contractors and the general public,” Livingstone said.
