Australia owned the Cloud in 2013: EMC

Storage vendor finds that competition locally is leading to more active engagement with customers around Cloud

2013 was the year Australia beat the world out in Cloud adoption, according to EMC A/NZ general manager Channels, Brett Harris.

As for how it happened, Harris attributes it to public, private and dedicated private Cloud adoption that increased at a faster rate than any other overseas market.

“For those building their own private Cloud, the adoption of new utility procurement models was dominant,” he said.

Amidst this growth, Harris said local customers are now actively trying to understand how best to migrate towards the Cloud.

“We are seeing this drive a wide variety of changes in the industry, from different technology options, to different consumptions models to different people involved in the buying process,” he said.

Decisions around choice

With Australia leading the way in Cloud adoption rates globally, Harris admits that there is no shortage of Cloud technologies and consumption models for businesses to consider.

As a result, Harris said Australia has become one of the first countries to “experience the impact” this has on decision making and purchasing.

“Today, vendors, channel partners and IT departments have started to engage in more strategic conversations with their business counterparts to agree technology buying decisions,” he said.

Harris adds that not many organisations will operate exclusively a public, private or virtual private Cloud.

“It will likely be a combination of all three, and this is where the opportunities and the challenges lie for the IT industry,” he said.

When it comes to recommending the right solution and consumption model for customers, Harris’ recommendation for the coming months is for all parties, particularly the vendor and channel partners, to understand all the options and have the necessary skills.
