The Victorian government is preparing to move to the next stage of its ICT strategy.
The Victorian government on Monday sought comment on an update to the plan that was launched in February 2013. The government strategy has a rolling two-year plan with an annual update that is designed to keep it up to date.
“The strategy is driving the delivery of better services, reducing duplication, encouraging innovation and improving ICT procurement and project management across government and, as we move towards the second stage, we need to ensure that the Victorian Government takes advantage of the opportunities arising from the ever-evolving ICT industry,” said Victorian technology minister, Gordon Rich-Phillips.
The framework for the next phase covering 2014 and 2015 includes streamlining access to information, improving cybersecurity and taking advantage of technology trends including location awareness, mobility and the cloud.
The stated priorities of the updated ICT strategy are:
- “Implement new digital government channels for citizens, business and other users.”
- “Implement whole of Victorian Government infrastructure as a service roadmap.”
- “Standardised systems and processes to improve the productivity of government.”
- “Deepen government capability to innovate and manage risk.”
On the second priority, the updated strategy document states, “An important element for future services provision will be confirming a whole of government cloud strategy, including principles, policies, standards and transition planning.”
“The policy direction will be to implement cloud services where they create the best outcome, and where they create opportunities to re-use and share services and strengthen capabilities.”
Grantly Mailes, the Victorian government’s chief technology advocate who was tasked with implementing the ICT strategy has said the government is ahead of schedule.
“The fact that we’ve caught every deadline since we released the plan in February is probably the biggest win,” Mailes told <I>CIO Australia</I> in October. “We’ve not missed a target. Many have come in more in quantum than we thought, or earlier than we thought, or both.”
Public consultation on the updated strategy closes on 10 February.
