Telerik lets developers choose between building Web, hybrid or native apps

A complete version of Telerik Platform costs from $149 per user and month

Telerik's new Platform toolset lets developers choose if they want to build Web, hybrid or native applications for multiple OSes and device types, allowing them to pick what they think is the best option.

Instead of forcing developers to choose between one of the three models, Telerik has combined its existing tools to offer more choice.

Platform lets developers create apps for desktops, tablets and smartphones that run Android, BlackBerry, iOS, Windows Phone or Windows. The level of choice also encompasses technologies such as .NET, JavaScript and HTML5, Java JSP and PHP.

Moving more of the process to hosted services is a hot trend in the development tool sector. Telerik's Platform lets developers use cloud-based services for collaboration, testing, management and to track user behavior.

Telerik Platform is available in four different versions -- Starter, Professional, Business and Enterprise -- that include different levels of functionality, user interface components and back-end services.

To get their feet wet, developers can download the free Starter version. It comes with Kendo UI Mobile, which lets users build mobile apps using Javascript and HTML.

To get a more complete package, developers will have to pay US$149 per user and month with an annual subscription for the Business version. Without an annual subscription, it costs $224 per month and user. Organizations that have more than 25 developers will have to get the Enterprise version, which also includes Active Directory integration. Telerik doesn't say what it costs.

Developers interested in learning more about Platform can take part in a webinar Feb. 12 that Telerik is organizing.
