Audi claims to be first automaker to offer 4G in its cars

AT&T and Audi unveiled pricing plans in-vehicle 4G LTE broadband.

All Audi A3 sedans equipped with Audi Connect will receive a free six-month 4G LTE trial period. The two companies said the service, which they claim is the first-ever 4G LTE service, will be available in the new 2015 A3 sedans slated to debut later this month.

Audi and GM first announced the upcoming availability of in-car broadband during the CES show in January.

GM also announced at CES plans for rolling out its 4G LTE capable vehicles. By the end of the year, Chevrolet should have more than 30 models supporting 4G LTE, "giving us the broadest deployment 4G LTE connectivity in the industry," said Stuart Fowle, a GM spokesperson.

GM will initially roll out AT&T 4G LTE services for the 2015 Cadillac ATS Coupe and GMC Canyon. The service will be available for mid-models of the Chevrolet Tahoe. Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon and Yukon Denali, and GMC Yukon XL and Yukon XL Denali.

Audi said previous experience with 3G+ Audi Connect owners has shown they prefer either a 6-month or a 30-month term, and "which are designed to accommodate the consumer's typical usage."

"The plans are based off typical usage in a vehicle. Customers can be sent e-mail alerts if they near the data plan limit," Audi stated.

Scott Keogh, president of Audi of America, said "the new AT&T data plans with 4G LTE connectivity will allow Audi drivers to enjoy seamless navigation, streaming and high-speed access to the Internet."

Audi said it plans to expand 4G LTE capability across its entire lineup as new or refreshed models come to market.
