CIO's role only becoming more complex: Apptio

Enterprise software company finds technology leaders at businesses have more to manage than before

IT is going through the most significant change it ever has, according to Apptio.

Founder and CEO, Sunny Gupta, said this is illustrated in the discussion about the job of the CIO being dead and the CMO taking over.

Gupta said the enterprise software company’s opinion is the contrary.

“IT has become complex as legacy applications, infrastructure and outsourcers need to be managed, and then you have the Cloud,” he said.

As for how IT is changing, Gupta said it is becoming more of a service provider for the business.

“An organisation can go and buy a unit of compute or storage directly from providers, though without the same level of transparency in consumption metering and billing,” he said.

Thus, Gupta does not expect the future of IT to be all in the Cloud or outsourced, but in a hybrid environment.

“Some services are going to be consumed directly from the Cloud, and some are going to be built by the CIO,” he said.

Growing locally

As for what the the modern CIO can expect, Gupta said they are not only going to manage the technology which they are providing to the business, but also the ones the business is consuming.

“The new supply chain of IT is a lot more complex, and that’s the reason why managing that technology from a business point of view becomes pretty important,” he said.

Apptio operates in a market category it has terned "technology business management," and it is one that helped establish it in the US and Europe.

The company has also expanded to Australia, which Gupta said is just the starting place for its Asia Pacific expansion.

“Australia will act as a launchpad, as our goal is to provide this technology to all customers in Asia Pacific,” he said.
