One of the first laptops with a 4K screen will go on sale from Toshiba for US$1,499.99 next week.

The Satellite P55T has a 15.6-inch screen that can display images at a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels, which is four times that of the current high-definition 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution. Laptop screens have largely topped out at 3200 x 1800 pixels, such as in Razer's Blade gaming laptop, Samsung's Ativ Book 9 Plus and Lenovo's Yoga 2 Pro.

Toshiba's 4K laptop will ship on April 22 in the U.S. The company did not immediately comment on worldwide availability.

TVs, monitors and cameras supporting 4K resolution are available, and Panasonic is selling a tablet-like computer with a 20-inch 4K screen through channels. The release of Satellite P55T could prompt Toshiba's competitors to move up to 4K displays. But a large number of budget laptops still have screen resolutions from 1366 x 768 pixels to 1920 x 1080 pixels.

The Satellite P55T is also rich on hardware features. It has an Intel Core i7 quad-core processor, an Advanced Micro Devices Radeon R9 M265X graphics card, 1TB hard drive and 16GB of DDR3 DRAM. Other features include four USB 3.0 ports, 802.11ac Wi-Fi and a Blu-Ray Disc drive. Laptop users can still use external 4K displays with an HDMI port.

The laptop is aimed at creative professionals and multimedia enthusiasts, Toshiba said in a statement. The laptop is certified by Technicolor Color Certified -- to ensure color consistency and accuracy -- and is also equipped with image and color calibration tools from Toshiba. It also has Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5 software.
