CQUniversity deploys student management system in record time

New platform rolled out in nine months and will cut admissions times from weeks to hours

Queensland’s CQUniversity has deployed a student management system in nine months, which the institution claims is around half the industry average.

The system – supplied by local developer TechnologyOne – went live on July 1 and replaced an Oracle PeopleSoft ISAS platform.

CQUniversity’s deputy vice chancellor, international and services, Alastair Dawson, said similar projects in the education sector can take between 18 and 24 months to complete.

Dawson said the new system was preconfigured and proven, which ensured the vocational side of the institution was ready to go live with reduced cost and risk.

The project began last September following a merger with CQ TAFE, making CQUniversity Queensland’s first dual sector university. Dawson said the merger presented an opportunity to revolutionise the delivery off education and training in Central Queensland and beyond.

“It also facilitated the adoption of innovative systems and processes, preparing the new university for the future and enabling it to deliver a better student experience for more than 30,000 students,” Dawson said.

TechnologyOne’s executive chairman, Adrian Di Marco, said the software will enable the university to streamline business processes and improve the online admissions process.

This will mean cutting the time it takes from the student making an enquiry to being accepted into a course from weeks to days and hours. It some cases, students may even get an offer on the spot.

“Because we built our student management solution with a for education customers, it continues to displace multinational incumbents and their cumbersome software,” Di Marco said.

TechnologyOne has strong foothold in the education sector; more than half of the universities and TAFEs across Australia use its software.

In February, it signed a multi-million dollar contract with the Catholic Education Commission of Victoria. It also completed rollouts at nine Victorian TAFEs in late 2013.
