VMware locally announced the launch of a series of product updates, including for vSphere and its VSAN storage platform.

The updates, which see VMware amping up its hybrid cloud strategy and moving toward what it has termed the “software-defined data centre”, were announced in Sydney today for the local market after they were unveiled earlier this week in San Francisco.

VMware said vSphere 6 adds more than 650 new features to the vendor’s virtualization product for hybrid cloud and software-defined data centres. VMware said the updates increase performance, uptime and resilience of cloud infrastructure.

One big new feature in vSphere 6 is a long-distance migration capability called Long-Distance vMotion, which allows customers to migrate workloads from coast to coast without any downtime, VMware said.

The vSphere update also includes instant cloning and provisioning of thousands of VMs at a time and support for 3D NVIDIA graphics processors.

Virtual SAN 6 enhances performance and scalability of the software-defined storage product. Vmware vSphere Virtual Volumes will make external arrays natively aware of virtual machines.

Virtual SAN 6 uses exclusively flash storage for both caching and data persistence, which VMware said provides a four-times increase in input/output throughput per node compared to VMware Virtual SAN 5.5.

In addition, Virtual SAN 6 doubles scalability to 64 nodes, allowing customers to use up to 6400 virtual machines per cluster and exceed 8 PB of storage capacity from a cluster.

VMware also is rolling out an integrated OpenStack distribution, giving developers open API access to enterprise VMware infrastructure. In addition, VMWare has released a technology preview that enables customers to integrate public and private cloud through the combination of VMware NSX network virtualization and VMware’s public cloud service, vCloud Air.

VMware vSphere 6, VMware Integrated OpenStack, VMware Virtual SAN 6 and VMware vSphere Virtual Volumes are expected to become available in the first quarter of this year.

Pricing

Note: All pricing in US dollars.

Pricing for vSphere 6 starts at $995 per CPU; with operations management included, the price is $1745 per CPU. Pricing for vCloud Suite 6 starts at $,995 per CPU.

VMware Integrated OpenStack is free for use for vSphere Enterprise Plus, vSphere with Operations Management Enterprise Plus and vCloud Suite customers. Production-level technical support for VMware Integrated OpenStack including the OpenStack open source code is optional and can be purchased separately for $200 per CPU (minimum of 50 CPUs).

VMware Virtual SAN is priced at $2495 per CPU. VMware Virtual SAN for Desktop is priced at $50 per user. The new all-flash architecture will be available as on add-on to VMware Virtual SAN 6 and will be priced at $1495 per CPU and $30 per desktop.

VMware vSphere Virtual Volumes will be packaged as a feature in VMware vSphere Standard Edition and above as well as VMware vSphere ROBO editions.
