Optus customers to get six months of Netflix

Customers will receive unmetered content from the US-based streaming provider from April 17

Optus on Wednesday announced that new and re-contracting customers will get a six month subscription to the Netflix movie and TV streaming service when they sign up for certain broadband or mobile plans.

The number two telco will be offering customers un-metered Netflix content from April 17. Netflix will begin offering services in Australia on March 24.

Optus first indicated last week that it had struck a deal with the US-based streaming giant the same day that competitor iiNet announced it would be offering customers quota-free access to the service. iiNet broadband, Naked DSL, NBN and iiNet TV with Fetch customers can stream unlimited Netflix content.

Optus said customers will receive a subscription when they sign up to a home broadband bundle or postpaid mobile service on a $60 plan or above and 24-month contract; or a postpaid mobile broadband service on a $30 plan or above and 24-month contract.

The telco is also giving prepaid customers a three month subscription when they purchase any prepaid phone or mobile broadband device and activate the included SIM. Customers will need to sign up between March 24 and July 5 for the service.

Optus Fetch TV users can also access Netflix through an app on their Fetch TV second generation set top box.

Telstra has also done a deal of its own signing an agreement to resell Presto’s subscription video on-demand service to its customers. Telstra will also soon launch a Presto app on its T-Box digital set top box.
