Google to update tools for students and teachers

Recently, Google has deepened its push into classrooms, partly through a new VR program.

Google plans to unveil changes to its suite of products and services for students, teachers and other working professionals at an event on Sept. 2.

Though there aren't details yet, the changes will include updates to the company's suite of productivity tools, and will be showcased at an event at Google's San Francisco headquarters, according to an invite sent to the media.

Google offers a broad lineup of products and tools aimed at teachers and students, including educational apps, online materials and devices like Chromebooks and tablets.

The company also provides Google Classroom, designed to help teachers create and organization assignments.

Recently, Google has shown a desire to deepen its push into the classroom. In February, the company acquired Launchpad Toys, which makes children's apps for the classroom.

And at this year's Google I/O, the company announced a new effort to bring virtual reality to the classroom. The company's "Expeditions" program integrates Google's Cardboard VR viewer into the classroom to let teachers send their students on virtual field trips.

In addition to other updates, it's possible the September event could expand the VR program.

Google's data mining practices have landed the company in hot water with schools. Last year, the company said it would no longer scan students' emails for advertising purposes, after a lawsuit sparked privacy concerns.
