Adoption of new technology top priority in digital business transformation: Gartner

Creating collaborative work environment, customer driven technology change also top priorities

Adopting new technology is the top priority for the businesses that are leading the pack when it comes to digital transformation, according to a Gartner survey.

Gartner surveyed 304 business leaders from organisations with revenue of US$250 million or more in Australia, US, UK and Germany. It found 70 per cent of those who are leading digital business transformation are making new technology a top priority, meaning CIOs and tech leaders are pivotal to making digital happen.

The next top priorities, the survey found, are creating a collaborative work environment, cited by 56 per cent of leaders, and supporting customer-driven technology change (cited by 53 per cent).

Gartner found 32 per cent of leaders said their organisations are already digital businesses, an increase of 10 per cent from the 2014 edition of the survey.

The benefit digital business transformation is expected to bring for most survey participants is an improvement in customer experience and engagement (86 per cent). Workforce productivity is also expected from 84 per cent of survey participants.

Only 7 per cent expect this change would negatively impact staff, and 6 per cent say would affect mergers and acquisitions.

“Organisational leaders… will also need to adapt by restructuring the workforce, eliminating obsolete roles, and finding talent that can help design systems and workflows that optimise the use of things integrated with people and business to drive new value for customers,” said Gartner analyst, Jorge Lopez.

Design and creating “new digital business moments” were also identified by survey participants as important to executing digital business.

Gartner defines design in terms of systems design and digital business moments as the catalyst for a network of “people, businesses and things that spans or crosses multiple industries and multiple ecosystems”.

“Innovative companies are tailoring digital business moments to complement their existing products and services,” said Gartner research vice president, Patrick Meehan.
