Optus promises 100% satellite coverage for mobile users

SatSleeve diverts out of range calls to the Optus satellite rather than a fixed line

A new generation of SatSleeve models means mobile users in regional Australia can have 100% coverage where line of sight to the Optus Thuraya satellite exists, according to Optus.

Thuraya’s SatSleeve+ allows users out of mobile range to have their call diverted to the Optus satellite rather than a fixed line, turning their handset into a satellite phone via the SatSleeve app.

SatSleeve connects to various iOS or Android devices from Apple, Samsung, HTC, LG, Sony and Huawei, and is functional so long as there is nothing obstructing the satellite connectivity.

Separately, the SatSleeve Hotspot product is designed to act as a WiFi hotspot service to deliver voice calls, SMS and enhanced data to a smartphone or tablet.

Businesses in the transport and logistics, construction, resources, forestry and agricultural sectors, as well as local, state and federal government departments can benefit from more coverage in regional zones. Users can access voice, SMS and data services with the sleeve, providing there is a direct line of sight to the satellite.

WiFi connectivity means Bluetooth accessories such as vehicle hands-free systems and headsets can now be used when making satellite calls. It also has a programmable emergency SOS button that enables users to connect to emergency services

“In a country as vast as ours, living and working in remote areas is increasingly common,” said Paul Sheridan, vice president of Optus Satellite.

“We know that the resources and mining sector boom has seen large workforces stationed in remote locations. With a SatSleeve, people can stay in touch when outside of mobile range.”
