Optus inks $115M ICT services deal with Immigration and Border Protection

Telco to manage 15,000 IP handsets, 1,000 wireless access points and nearly 1,000 LAN switches, and CCTV and radio services

The Department of Immigration and Border Protection will spend $115 million over the next three years on end-to-end telecommunications and managed IT services, following a new agreement with Optus.

Under the contract, Australia’s second largest telco will combine telecommunications services of the former Australian Customs and Border Protection Service and the Department of Immigration and Border Protection into the newly integrated Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP).

Optus is managing around 15,000 IP handsets, 1,000 wireless access points and nearly 1,000 LAN switches, and CCTV and radio services through a helpdesk.

This is supported by Optus multiprotocol label switching carriage network, satellite communications and mobile data to around 200 sites throughout Australia.

“Optus will be providing design and implementation support as the Department optimises their telecommunications infrastructure, data centres, telephony platforms and their ICT needs moving forward,” said Optus Business managing director, John Paitaridis.

Randall Brugeaud, CIO at the Department of Immigration and Border Protection, said the managed services agreement will help the agency meet its strategic objectives to promote responsive migration, advance trade and revenue, and lead border innovation.
