ATO releases new open dataset

The Australian Tax Office has come out with data summarising the tax income and tax payable of more than 1,500 companies.

The data, which has been made available on data.gov.au, includes about 60 technology companies. Thirteen of those 60 companies had zero or less in tax payable during 2013-14.

“As the legislation does not allow for the reporting of an amount of zero or less, these fields are left blank,” the ATO explained.

The data lists public and foreign companies, including foreign private companies, with a total income of $100 million and above.

Data on Australian-owned resident private companies is coming early 2016.

The aim of releasing this data is to improve corporate tax transparency and allow the public to explore any issues around tax.

The tech companies where cells were left blank under the ‘Tax Payable’ column of the dataset are:

  • Acer Computer Australia Pty Limited
  • Alcatel-Lucent Australia Limited
  • Amaysim Australia Pty Ltd
  • BAE Systems Australia Holdings Limited
  • Dimension Data Australia Pty Ltd
  • Fuji Xerox Asia Pacific Pte Limited
  • Hewlett Packard South Pacific Pty Ltd
  • Ingram Micro Holdings (Australia) Pty Limited
  • NEC Australia Pty Ltd
  • Nokia Australia Pty Limited
  • Nokia Solutions And Networks Australia Pty Ltd
  • Toshiba International Corporation Pty Ltd
  • Vodafone Hutchison Australia Pty Ltd
