The Sydney Opera House’s former head of information systems, Daniel Johnson has landed a new CIO role at not-for-profit organisation, MTC Australia. He has replaced Ash Kumar, who had been with the organisation since June 2014 and is now managing director at Nvoke Partners.

Johnson departed Sydney Opera House last November after 8 years with the organisation. His departure coincided with the appointment of Nic Boling as its first chief technology officer. Boling was previously head of technical support at the organisation.

MTC Australia offers support to the community through training courses, employment services, youth programs, and community initiatives. It employs around 500 staff across 280 sites.

Speaking to CIO Australia, Johnson said what attracted him to the position was the role the organisation plays within the community.

“MTC provides services to help people educate themselves and ultimately secure employment,” he said.

Johnson said he didn’t expect leading the technology team at a not-for-profit to be any different to a commercial organisation.

“The goal is always to find the most cost-effective solution to meet the business needs or provide a competitive advantage,” he said.

During his tenure at MTC, former CIO Ash Kumar, led a strategic review of the organisation's IT operations which included define and delivering a customer experience framework, and delivering operational readiness by achieving operational alignment to ITIL. It also included creating a standard operating environment, rationalising applications and integration along with business process improvements.
