New tool measures job candidate’s emotional judgement

Enables career and life experience to be converted into independently-verified and validated credentials

DeakinDigital and recruiter, Hudson, have unveiled a tool designed to measure a job candidate’s workplace emotional judgement.

Launched in August last year, DeakinDigital is the university’s credentialing business, which enables professionals to gain formal recognition for the skills, knowledge and capabilities they have acquired at work and online.

Users share and manage independently verified and validated credentials – digital badges – that can be used to demonstrate skills to employers.

Deakin said the Emotional Judgement Credential allows individuals to better perceive, understand and manage their own emotions and those around them, enhancing their performance as colleagues, managers, or leaders.

DeakinDigital said the tool – which is an Australian first – enables career and life experience to be converted into independently-verified and validated credentials. Users can demonstrate a range of professional skills such as critical thinking, emotional judgement, and self-management.

The organisation said that historically, many companies have focused their employee criteria and training programs on the assessment of ‘hard’ skills relating directly to the job at hand.

But competencies like empathy, interpersonal interaction and the ability to motivate others have been shown to be critical success factors and directly impact company profits.

Simon Moylan, executive general manager at Hudson Talent Management said regardless of the number of degrees, technical qualifications, skills or experience a person has, without effective emotional judgement, they are less likely to succeed in today’s work environment.

“As the workplace continues to evolve, our clients are increasingly reporting how fundamental this competency is to the success of their business,” he said.

DeakinDigital declined to reveal the number of participants in its credentials program when approached by CIO Australia. However, the organisation said it is currently undertaking pilot programs with several organisations, including Cisco.

“We have some exciting initiatives in the pipeline that will increase the number of participants receiving industry-recognised credentials with DeakinDigital,” a spokesperson said.
