Emirates and IBM sign 10-year IT services deal

Emirates can encrypt data in real-time and build new apps

Dubai’s Emirates Airlines has inked a US$300 million technology services deal with IBM in a bid to improve airline efficiency on its passenger support systems and functions.

The ten-year agreement provides fully managed services for the IBM mainframe and storage that will help Emirates encrypt data in near real-time, a statement from IBM said.

Additionally, the platform allows the airline to build new apps that will support the API Economy - a commercial exchange of business functions, capabilities, or competencies as services packaged in APIs.

“By moving its IT Infrastructure delivery into a managed services model, the airline will benefit from improved business application performance, resilience, scalability, an agile service delivery model, and significant operational savings,” IBM said.

Emirates also collaborated with IBM earlier this year to enhance its Passenger Service System (PSS). It has also used IBM’s Z-series mainframes to run its ticketing and reservations system for more than 30 years. The ticketing and reservation technology lets the airline process ultra-high volumes of real-time business transactions including flight reservations, inventory, check-in, ticketing, and flight information.

The Emirates deal follows another big win for Big Blue, after it signed a US$700 million deal with Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Airways in October 2015 to supply a host of IT services and infrastructure.
