Gee to head a major tech transformation initiative

Former CUA CIO, David Gee, has moved across to Metlife Insurance in Japan as its new statutory executive officer, senior VP, and CIO.

Gee started work at the US$70 billion global insurance provider last week, based at its Tokyo office.

In the new role, Gee said he is heading a major tech transformation project that will see Metlife Japan migrate from several older systems, many of which were inherited from its 2010 acquisition of life insurance business, Alico from AIG.

“This is part of my short term focus,” Gee told CIO Australia. “There are also significant customer-facing inflight programs of work … and a process underway to establish a major application development centre.”

Critical to the transformation’s success will be the coaching and development of the team to help them move into a more agile and customer-focused organisation, Gee said.

“The broader transformation in the business is accelerating and IT has a strategic role to play in this change,” he added.

Since moving on from his role at CUA in mid-2014, Gee had been an advisor at early stage technology investment firm, Sapien Ventures; and executive advisor and mentor at knowledge technology start up, KnowledgeFlux, and blockchain payments provider, BitPOS.

He was also a mentor at Tyro Fintech Hub, and a strategic advisory board member at seed fund and accelerator program, Venturetech Accelerator.

Gee was CIO at CUA between September 2011 and June 2014. During this time, he completed a transformation project at CUA which included delivery of a new core banking system.
