46 roles on the line as Telstra eyes up IBM cloud outsourcing deal

Telco turns to Big Blue as trimming of technical workforce continues across infrastructure deployment, core engineering and end-user services.

Telstra has revealed plans to outsource 46 cloud roles to IBM, as the telecommunications giant continues to restructure its technical workforce.

As a result, the telco will outsource work performed in Telstra Service Operations (TSO) and Information Technology Services (ITS) divisions, impacting Sydney and Melbourne-based roles across infrastructure deployment, core engineering and end-user services.

Based on “in-depth analysis” of business requirements, Telstra said the outsourcing to IBM will help strengthen its cloud and data analytics divisions.

“We are proposing changes to our Service Operations Solution Centre and our Infrastructure Deployment & Core Engineering teams to improve efficiencies, improve the customer experience and provide a scalable workforce, complemented by the global expertise of our partner IBM,” a Telstra spokesperson told The Australian.

Specific to end-user services however, Telstra told the Communications Workers Union (CWU) that “new ways of working are needed that can’t be delivered by current systems and current staff”.

“If part of the problem was a lack of “innovation” within the company, as Telstra appeared to suggest, then the problem might lie more with management than employees,” a CWU statement said.

“Employees in these areas have for some time been making suggestions about how things could be improved, but these have fallen on deaf ears.

“We are now waiting to see what further information about the rationale for their decision Telstra is willing to provide.”

Telstra first notified the union of its intentions on November 8.
