Skype releases client for Nokia's N8

Skype released an updated version of its Symbian client, which adds support for Nokia's N8, C7 and the E5, the company said in a blog post on Wednesday.

The client comes with better voice quality, thanks to the addition of Skype's SILK audio codec, the software that is used to translate voice signals into a digital format that can be sent over a data network.

Skype has also improved the user interface, making it easier for users to add contacts, navigate and add a photo to their profile. The company has updated the interface to better fit larger screens, as well.

With the new version, users can make free Skype-to-Skype calls over a Wi-Fi or a 3G network. The calls are free, but users still have to pay for the mobile data connection. Skype recommends using an unlimited data plan.

The application will also allow users to communicate with instant messaging and make calls to regular phones for a fee.

Skype can also be used on Apple's iPhone, iPod touch and other smartphones based on Google's Android OS, as long as long as they use version 2.1 or later. Users of Samsung's Galaxy S have to upgrade to version 2.2 of Android for the client to work, according to Skype.
