NT government renews NEC networking contracts

The Northern Territory government has extended three networking contracts with NEC Australia for 12 months.

Under an extended network management contract, NEC will manage the state government’s WAN, including more than 500 communications links and associated routers, LAN, firewalls, core switching systems and mail and web front-end systems.

A second contract for the voice network covers a Territory-wide IP telephony network, including 20,000 ends in more than 300 sites. The third contract includes support for 16,000 desktops and 400 servers.

NEC described each extension as “multi-million dollar” contracts, with the desktop and server contract worth the most. All three contracts started in mid-2010, but NEC has worked with the NT government for 10 years.

NEC said there will be continued flow on business for other technology businesses that subcontract to NEC. “This will enable NEC Australia to continue to employ trainees and apprentices to help grow the territory’s technology skills base,” it said.

In May 2012, NEC Australia acquired CSG’s Technology Solutions business, making NEC the largest ICT employer in the Northern Territory with more than 240 staff, it said.
