Former Australian government CIO, Glenn Archer, has joined Gartner as research vice-president for its public sector research group.

In his new role, Archer will advise the research firm’s government technology and executive clients worldwide, and his primary research will focus on the rapid transition to digital service delivery by governments.

Archer quit as the Australian Government’s CIO in February this year after spending just over one year in the role. He led the Australian Government Information Management Office (AGIMO), which promotes the efficient use of information and communications technology by local government departments and agencies.

In mid-2013, Archer commented that exhaustive government ICT processes were making it time consuming and difficult for public sector agencies to innovate. At the time, he said that although ICT investment processes are important, they are slowing innovation across departments.

Gartner’s managing vice-president, Andrea Di Maio, who leads the firm’s public sector research team, said the appointment comes as governments across the world pursue digital strategies.

“The digital transformation of citizen services as well as internal information and processes is partly due to the opportunities created by technology, and partly a consequence of political agendas seeking a quantum improvement in constituent service and operational efficiency,” Di Maio stated.

“Glenn’s experience in balancing these demands will make him a very valuable advisor to Gartner’s public sector clients globally.”

Archer spent several years working in the public sector. He held IT management roles at Centrelink between June 2002 and January 2007, before undertaking CIO roles at the Department of Education Science and Training, and the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations between February 2007 and June 2010.

He was also first assistant secretary, policy and planning at the Department of Finance and Deregulation between June 2010 and November 2012.

Archer starts at Gartner on May 19.
