NTT debuts instant cloud

Companies can use a portal to quickly spin up services when required

NTT Communications Corporation on Monday unveiled what it claimed to be the first suite of cloud network services that can be instantly activated online.

Universal one, a cloud networking services platform that enables companies to switch on cloud services immediately using a pay-per-use model, will be available in Australia from tomorrow.

NTT Com said the services eliminate traditional long-term contract commitments and free companies from investing in and managing multiple, dedicated network appliances for globally distributed offices.

The company said the subscription model enables CIOs to simplify network architecture, allowing them to focus on their core business.

The services are powered by Virtela Technology Services, acquired by NTT Com in January this year. The service uses network functions virtualization (NFV) technology, which virtualizes and links network nodes together to create communication services.

Takashi Ooi, NTT Com’s VP of enterprise network service, said the company is using NFV in its cloud networking centres worldwide to deliver network functions such as firewall and application acceleration for branch offices.

Customers use a portal to activate cloud services when and where they are needed, NTT Com said. Service deployments that took months now take minutes and configuration changes that took weeks can now be done in real time, the company claimed.

Universal one includes four new cloud services; application acceleration, a firewall, IPSEC VPN gateway, and SSL VPN.
