Deakin University overhauls network

Melbourne’s Deakin University has overhauled its campus-wide wireless network to overcome performance issues for 52,000 students and 5,000 staff using multiple mobile devices.
More than 500 new wireless access points were installed and around 100 existing points were upgraded across the university’s four campuses.
The new wireless infrastructure enables more than 30,000 devices to be connected to the network simultaneously and has increased wireless coverage across the whole university by 82 per cent with up to 91 per cent coverage in student areas. This is up from 28 per cent before the overhaul.
Deakin University’s chief digital officer, William Confalonieri, said the existing wireless network was an IT service which could not be relied upon. He rated performance levels as ‘mediocre at best.’
“When it comes to wireless connectivity, the project was not only about fixing and frustration, but improving the learning experience for our students.
“Deakin is a young, inspiring and innovative university with great ambitions, Confalonieri said.
“A seamless online experience is important to our students and staff, and a dependable wireless network is an imperative part of bringing to life a number of new projects,” he said.
The new network was deployed by Dimension Data.
