​NextDC invests $160M in new data centres in Queensland and Victoria

NextDC CEO Craig Scroggie: Investment reflects ongoing customer demand across Queensland and Victoria

NextDC said today it had signed a contract to acquire a site in Tullamarine in Victoria for its M2 data centre. This follows an announcement yesterday that it had selected a site on the fringes of Brisbane’s CBD for its B2 data centre.

The data centre provider is spending $85 million on its M2 facility in Tullamarine, which will have an initial power capacity of 2 megawatts at launch, scaling up to 25 megawatts at full fit-out.

“This investment into Victoria’s growing IT industry and Australia’s wider business economy reflects the ongoing customer demand we’re experiencing for NextDC’s premium data centre services,” NextDC CEO Craig Scroggie said.

The site’s selection followed an extensive review of potential locations, which included access to power, water and telecommunications infrastructure, resilience to potential security and environmental risks, and convenient physical access for customers.

The B2 site is located on the fringes of Brisbane’s CBD in Fortitude Valley. The data centre, expected to cost $75 million, will have an initial power capacity of 1.5 megawatts at launch, with a target capacity of 6 megawatts when complete.

“Our new Fortitude Valley location is within close proximity to Brisbane’s commercial centres, and will allow us to address robust demand for a secure, powerful facility to host critical IT infrastructure and support a diverse ecosystem of carriers and cloud service providers,” added Scroggie.

NextDC expects practical completion of both M2 and B2 towards the end of the second half of FY17.

The two new centres, when complete, will give NextDC a total power capacity of 73 megawatts across seven facilities nationwide.
