In what could be a precursor of legal action to come, mobile software vendor Carrier IQ has been hit with two lawsuits over the use of its <a href="http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9222332/FAQ_Behind_the_Carrier_IQ_rootkit_controversy">controversial tracking technology</a> in tens of millions of mobile phones worldwide.
An increasingly <a href="http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9222332/FAQ_Behind_the_Carrier_IQ_rootkit_controversy_">besieged Carrier IQ</a> (CIQ) yesterday insisted that its software is designed only to help wireless carriers diagnose operational problems on networks and mobile devices. But its own marketing material for one of the products raises doubts about that claim.
Verizon Wireless said Thursday it doesn't add to its phones any software from Carrier IQ, the company that has come under fire in the past few days for what some say amounts to spying on mobile phone users.
