• Red Hat acquires Makara

  Enterprise open-source software vendor Red Hat has acquired cloud software provider Makara, Red Hat announced Tuesday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

• Attachmate buying Novell for $2.2 billion

  Novell announced Monday it has agreed to be acquired by Attachmate for US$2.2 billion, ending months of speculation over its future. The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of next year.

• Talend acquires SOA vendor Sopera

  Open-source data integration vendor Talend is expanding its footprint into SOA (service-oriented architecture), announcing Wednesday that it has purchased Sopera, developer of an open-source ESB (enterprise service bus) and other technologies. Terms were not disclosed.

• Oracle buys Art Technology Group for $1 billion

  Oracle announced Tuesday that it plans to buy e-commerce vendor Art Technology Group for about $US1 billion. The deal is expected to be completed early next year.

• HP and 3Par sign definitive merger agreement

  Hewlett-Packard (NYSE:HPQ) and 3Par (NASDAQ:PAR) have signed a definitive agreement for HP to buy the California storage vendor for US$2.35 billion, the companies said Thursday.

• Google buys online currency management company Jambool

  Google has bought Jambool, a company that makes a platform for managing online payments for virtual goods sold on gaming and social networking sites.

• IBM buying Unica for $480 million

  IBM said Friday it intends to purchase marketing software maker Unica for roughly US$480 million, in a move that will boost Big Blue's capabilities for creating focused marketing campaigns. The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter of this year.
