Internet Service Provider (ISP), iiNet (ASX:IIN), has launched fetchtv1, a slimline version of its fetchtv2 service, available for all customers, regardless of broadband connection speeds.
Fetchtv1 gives customers access to new release movies, local free to air channels and a set top box with one terabyte of storage, as does its already available IPTV service, fetchtv2. However, specific channels including Discovery, National Geographic, MTV, Fox International, E! Entertainment Television, and international news channels are not included in the service as they are often not on an ADSL2 exchange enabled service.
iiNet chief technology officer, Greg Bader, said the service gives all customers the access to movies quota free and claims the storage capacity and three digital tuners will give users enough memory to store hours of television shows.
With the service, customers have access Movieplex, which has a number of newly released films and library movies and can be kept for 48 hours. There is also pause, rewind, fast forward and stop functions.
Monthly subscriptions to fetchtv1 are priced at $14.95 per month on a 24 month contract, with the $99 set up fee currently waived for all new fetchtv subscriptions.
The first three Australian ISPs to sign up to FetchTV are to face increased competition in the form of Apple's newly revamped Apple TV service.
The Apple service allows users to rent high definition (HD) movies, as well as stream YouTube, photos and music from their PCs.
