HP and VMware develop security for the cloud

Collaboration comes as the need for security increases

HP and VMware have joined forces to develop security software aimed exclusively at protecting virtualised and cloud environments.

The two companies announced today they would be collaborating to create and market next-generation intrusion prevention system solutions optimised for VMware’s vSphere environment.

HP’s networking director for the South Pacific region, Darren Read, said the collaboration comes as the need for security increases.

“With the growth of virtualisation and cloud computing, security requirements have never been more complex and critical to our clients,” Read said in a statement.

“Building upon HP’s global strategic alliance with VMware, this expanded relationship is designed to deliver additional innovative security technology for a converged infrastructure, providing protection that is automatic and seamless for our clients.”

As well as creating the security solution, the companies also announced they would be marketing a hardware and software solution that combines HP TippingPoint vController with VMware vShield App.

In a statement from VMware, chief technology officer and vice president, Allwyn Sequeira, said the solution will make it easier for IT managers to introduce security policies on virtual machines.

“The combined solution enables customers to deploy security policies that automatically adapt to changes to virtual environments, such as introducing a new virtual machine,” Sequeira said.

“It offers continuous protection of both the physical and virtual landscape from a single, integrated offering.”

The collaboration between the two companies comes as VMWare last week showed off its new mobile virtualisation platform for Android at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, with mobile users able to securely separate work applications from their personal applications through the platform.
