The Acer Iconia W701 tablet
Around 14,000 children at schools in Queensland will receive Windows 8 tablet computers following a new agreement between the Queensland Department of Education Training and Employment (QDETE) and Acer.
Students will be equipped with Acer Iconia W701 tablets in what is believed to be the largest Windows 8 tablet rollout in the Australia and one of the biggest worldwide to date.
QDETE’s CIO, David O’Hagan, said in a statement that the tablets would “further enable students to have interactive learning experiences anywhere, any time.
“The digital revolution has created remarkable opportunities for enhancing student learning and devices with built in 3G allow our students to stay connected wherever they are,” he said.
The Iconia W701 tablet, launched in April, ships with an Intel Core i3 processor, Intel HD graphics, an 11.6” touch screen, 4GB memory and 120GB of solid state storage. The tablet also includes a keyboard and docking cradle that enables users to adjust the screen at many different angles.
Acer claimed the tablet takes six seconds to boot and resumes in 1.5 seconds, automatically refreshing Web pages, Acer claimed. Students will also be able to store their files using the AcerCloud service.
The contract with the Queensland state government is the third that Acer Australia has been awarded by the department since 2011. In December 2011, Acer supplied 65,000 Aspire 1830T notebooks. to students across the state.
