The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) has tendered for a managed service provider to maintain IT infrastructure supporting 250 users – growing at 10 per cent annually – at its offices in Canberra and Melbourne.
Under the initial three-year contract, due to begin in September, the NHMRC is outsourcing all desktop, internet, business application, network, and service desk provisioning, maintenance and support.
The single supplier or consortium managed by a prime contractor would also provision IT staff, and provide assistance and advice on architecture and design, and strategic planning, the NHMRC said.
NHMRC is a largely Microsoft shop with a standard desktop and laptop fleet built on the Microsoft Windows 7 platform, connected to an unclassified DLM network.
“One of NHMRC’s key strategic IT directions is to consolidate infrastructure, systems and applications around a Microsoft-based implementation stack,” the agency said in its tender document.

It is unclear which outsourcing company is the incumbent at the NHMRC. In mid-2009, the agency awarded a three-year IT services, infrastructure and support contract to Logica. Under the agreement, Logica was providing the services to staff working at the National Institute of Clinical Studies in Canberra and Melbourne as well as remote workers.
