​Edith Cowan spends millions on new network

Perth’s Edith Cowan University (ECU) is rolling a new fixed and wireless network after signing a multi-million dollar agreement with system integrator, Data #3.

Under the agreement, the integrator will deploy Cisco technologies across ECU’s three campuses in Joondalup, Mount Lawley and Bunbury.

ECU CIO, Elizabeth Wilson, said the replacement of the university’s existing network with next-generation infrastructure will allow it to provide rich multimedia learning experiences to students, faculty and staff across its campuses.

Wilson told CIO in May that that redesign of the university’s network was the “most beneficial thing” it had done to support its digital strategy.

Over the past three years, the university has been rolling out a strategy to provide new digital services to 23,000 students and teaching staff across its campuses.

“People tend to forget that digital means there’s a lot more traffic going across the network, particularly in education with video – the amount of video going over our network now is huge,” Wilson said at the time.

ECU has also moved all of its data centre infrastructure to the cloud and rolled out cloud content management and virtual desktop environments as part of its transformation strategy.
