IT developers will need to broaden their skill set across multiple areas if they are to succeed in their next job search, according to recruitment firm Hays Information Technology.

Hays’ Quarterly Hotspots list of jobs in demand revealed a move away from the traditional developer role towards a more rounded job function.

“We are seeing a shift away from recruiting traditional developer candidates towards candidates who can handle the entire development lifecycle," Peter Noblet, senior regional director of Hays Information Technology, said in a statement.

“Employers want a well-rounded candidate who can perform in this broader role. They also want someone who can hit the ground running and who doesn’t need training.”

The recruiter said it was seeing “good levels of demand” for senior Java, Web, Microsoft SharePoint, senior .Net, and business intelligence developers “who can deal with multiple phases of the lifecycle".

Noblet said demand exists in the private and public sectors and advised developers to “gain multiple areas of technical expertise”.

There’s also demand for mobile app specialists in the development sector as organisations “attempt to stay ahead of the competition".

Meanwhile, there is demand in the infrastructure for level 1-2 helpdesk candidates as companies look for better support, as well as application support analysts.

In IT’s business sector, project managers with specific experience or domain knowledge are also in demand. However, employers are being selective as they look for candidates who have experience and are a good cultural fit with their organisations, Hays said.
