The Sydney Opera House has appointed Nic Boling as its chief technology officer in a newly created role. Boling was previously head of technical support at the organisation.

Meanwhile, the company's head of information systems, Daniel Johnson, will depart on November 20 after more than four years in the role. Johnson had been with Sydney Opera House since 2007, starting as an IS operations manager.

A Sydney Opera House spokesperson told CIO that Johnson's core responsibilities had been incorporated into the CTO role, aligned with the organisation's objective of unifying its technology leadership and planning.

The spokesperson said that Johnson will depart this month "having made a very significant contribution in the senior head of IS position."

Boling's newly created CTO role highlights the strategic importance of technology across the organisation, the spokesperson said.

Boling will lead the management and development of all ICT resources, infrastructure and operations for the organisation's corporate, commercial, building, and theatre-related activities.

He is tasked with implementing a whole-of-business technology strategy to unify Opera House's technology leadership and delivery; and will lead a unified technology team to deliver and maintain platforms that enable the organisation to sell tickets, put on shows, and maintain the building, the spokesperson said.

He will also work with other areas of the business to enrich the visitor experience - within the precinct and online - and will help expand the Opera House's reach through the use of digital technologies.

"Technology is an essential enabler of everything we do and this role is integral to our efforts to renew the Opera House for future generations of artists, audiences and visitors.

"Nic has a strong strategic and operational understanding of what technology needs to deliver in the Opera House’s corporate and production environments. He previously led the technical support team at the Opera House after moving across from our information systems (IS) operations team.

"Over the coming months, Nic will unify our technology leadership, planning and ICT-related teams and roles," the spokesperson said.

Boling is reporting to Sydney Opera House's chief financial officer, Natasha Collier.
