Queensland govt to tap IT-as-a-service in new Brisbane digs

DiData to roll out video collaboration, secure wired and wireless networking, printing, and team collaboration platforms

The Queensland government will adopt an as ‘as-a-service’ IT consumption model in a new Brisbane building opening next year, which will house 4,500 workers.

The government has selected system integrator, Dimension Data, to deliver network infrastructure and collaboration services to the 12,000 square metre building at 1 William St, following a rigorous 12-month tender process.

These services will be delivered from the government’s own CITEC data centres, and will cover most Queensland government agencies.

Public servants will take advantage of real-time video collaboration, secure wired and wireless networking, follow-me printing and imaging, and team collaboration platforms. Dimension Data said this technology can be implemented in future multi-tenant government buildings.

Dimension Data said the services will support mobile working by providing anywhere access to government information and apps. Workers across 39 floors will be able to access common, cost-effective ICT services, the integrator said.

Rodd Cunico, CEO at Dimension Data, said the Queensland government understands that technology is evolving rapidly and the traditional IT models of yesterday don’t cut it in today’s digital world.

“Rather than adhering to the old-world model of purchasing and operating IT internally, the government has embraced a consumption model, where it only pays for the services it uses," Cunico said.

“This not only dramatically reduces the total cost of ownership of its IT infrastructure, but also ensures thousands of public servants can work smarter and collaborate more effectively.”

The services are expected to be rolled out by 1 July, 2016.
