Mark Sheppard has moved into the role of digital lead for Asia-Pacific at GE.

Sheppard, who has been CIO for Australia and New Zealand at the organisation since 2012, confirmed his new position on Thursday morning.

Sheppard said he is now responsible for the commercialisation of software across the region.

“We are on quite a journey in the industrial Internet space and our region has huge potential,” Sheppard told CIO Australia.

Sheppard said he wants to create an Australian software centre of excellence and pitched the idea to global CEO, Jeff Immelt in 2014.

GE is looking to move more of its software development capability out to regions across the world rather than build up the GE Software Centre in San Ramon, California.

The company is undergoing a major transformation using software, data, and analytics to support what it refers to as its “industrial internet” capability. For example, GE is using sensors to capture real-time data from its jet engines to determine their condition.

Data relating to fuel flow, oil pressure, air temperature, and vibrations is sent to customer service and scheduling software to essentially eliminate unplanned downtime.
